Ruomeng Cui won the Management Science Best Paper Award
Ruomeng Cui, an Amazon visiting the academic with Amazon Supply Chain Optimization Technologies (SCOT), won the 2023 Management Science Best Paper Award in Operations Management.
Cui, who has leave from his role as associate professor of the Department of Information System and Operations Management at Goizueta Business School, Emory University, won the award with his co-authors Jun Li and Dennis Zhang for their 2020 paper, “Reduction of discrimination with reviews in Sharing Economic: Proof of Field Experiment at Airbnb. “
Their paper explored ways to reduce “widespread discrimination of hosts against guests of certain races in online marketplaces” by using peer-generated online reviews. Their work has affected division platforms’ strategies to combat discrimination.
The award is given ”to the referee of the manuscript to be most deserving for his contribution to the theory and practice of operating management among all operations confused in the last 3 years at Management Science.
Cui won his Ph.D. in Operations Management from the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University in 2014. In June 2022, she took up the Amazon as visitor academic. In this role, she builds and implements pioneering causal association, machine learning, optimization and financial models to make decisions about the supply chain.
Christos Falutsos won Donald G. Fink Overview Paper Award

Nicholas Kullman, a senior researcher with Amazon Line Haul, won this year’s transport science journal. Kullman and Hans Coauthors – Martin Cousineau, Justin C. Goodson and Jorge E. Mendoza – were awarded for their paper from 2021, ”Dynamic Ride-Hailing with Electric Vehicles”.
In the paper, “the authors” are considering the problem of an operator who controls a fleet of electric vehicles for use in a riding-hailing service. The operator who tries to maximize the profits must allocate vehicles to requests as they are good to reload and reposition vehicles in anticipation of future requests. “
“As automatic vehicles become more common, fleets of taxis can become more centrally coordinated,” Kullman explained. “We wanted to consider this case where there is a central authority that checks that or not requests are accepted or rejected.
“We wanted to look at the good police to find out which vehicles to operate requests and what do you do with your vehicle when they are not serving requests so they are better placed to serve future requests – a kind of dynamic stochaste vehicle that routing probe.”
The team used deep reinforcement learning to develop new policies. The policies we compared “against so more classic operations research methods” and “and against double boundaries for the value of an optimal policy.”
“I think one of the other reasons why the paper was well received was that we had double limits,” Kullman explained. “We built a benchmark where we knew we didn’t go there, no better than the standard. Basal if you are the taxi authority and you know exactly where and when these requests should show up, what would you do?”
The team found its “best policy trained with deep reinforcement, learning surpasses the re -In method.” Kullman, who joined Amazon in 2021, won a Ph.D. in Operations from the University of Tours. At Amazon, he examines the optimization of Middle Mile Linehaul operations.
Niklas Karlsson by name IEEE Fellow
Niklas Karlsson, a senior main scientist in Amazon Advertising Engineering, was recently appointed an IEEE fellow for “Technical Management for VSLAM and Online Advertising.” The term came into force on January 1st. As acquisitions and mergers, he ended up with Yahoo, where after 17 years in online advertising he left as chief scientist and vice president of research and development for Yahoo’s demand platform.
The IEEE fellow Fellow Designation is awarded by the IEEE board of individuals with outstanding items over implementation within one of the IEEE fields of interest. The total number elected for one year cannot exceed 0.1% of total election membership. IEEE Fellow is the highest quality of membership and is recognized by the technical society as a prestigious honor and an important career performance.
Joan Feigenbaum by name IEE Fellow
Joan Feigenbaum, an Amazon -Learn and Grace Murray jumping professor in computer science at Yale University, will be raised to IEEE fellow in 2024. Degree of IEEE -Fellow “recognizes unique distinction in engineering.”
Feigenbaum, who works in AWS Cryptographic Algorithms Group on Privacy’s Conservation Calculation, was awarded “For contributions to Trustworking System and Internet algorithm.”
Hugo Krawczyk named IACS Distinguished Speaker
Hugo Krawczyk, senior main scientist, Amazon Web Services, was chosen to present 2023 IACR Distinguished Reading.
The International Association for Cryptologic Research (IACR), which separates readings, is awarded “to people who have made important contributions to cryptology studies.”
Krawczyk, which is also an IACR fellow, has contributed basic contributions to the cryptographic design of Internet Standard Likec, Ike and TLS. He also invented several cryptographic algorithms included HMAC message approval algorithm.
Before joining Amazon in July 2023, he was the main scientist at the Algorand Foundation and part of its basic team. Prior to that, he was an IBM fellow and an employee research employee at IBM TJ Watson Research Center as a member of the Cryptography Research Group from 1992 to 1997, and again from 2004 to 2019. He was an associate professor at the Department of Electrical Technology from 1997 to 2004.
Aaditya Ramdas won Peter Gavin Hall IMS Early Career Prize
Aaditya Ramdas, an Amazon who showed an academic who is also assistant professor of statistics and machine learning at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), won Peter Gavin Hall Institute of Mathematical Statistics (IMS) Early Career Award. The award “recognizes a researcher annually who is together with the first eight years to end their doctorate.” Ramdas has a Bacehlor’s degree in computer science and technique from IIT-Bombay and served both a master’s degree and a PhD. in statistics and machine learning from CMU.
Ramdas examines selective and contemporary inference, game-theoretical statistics and predictable inference with black box. His areas of used interest include neuroscience, genetics and auditing.
Aaron Roth by the name of Cylabs winner of the Alumni Award from 2023 Distinguished Alumni Award
Aaron Roth, an Amazon -Lærd who is Henry Salvatori -professor in computer and cognitive science at the University of Pennsylvania, was appointed Distination Alumni Award -Winner of Cylab,,,,,,,, Carnegie Mellon University’s Security and Privacy Research Institute. The award recognizes “Roth’s expertise in algorithms and machine learning, management in the field and commitment to its students.”
Roth, who joined Amazon as a scholar in 2020, examines the algorithmic foundations of data private, algorithmic justice, game theory, learning theory and machine learning.
