President Donald Trump threatens to change Washington Commanders’ new Washington, DC Stadium Deal if the team refuses to change the name back to “Redskins.”
After the Ommarket Mexico Golf to the Gulf of America earlier this year, the president is now calling for Washington commanders and Cleveland Guardians to turn their names to Washington Redskins and the Cleveland Indians.
But his demands on the commanders come with a threat: go back to Redskins, or lose your stadium.
“I might have a limitation on them that if they don’t change the name back to the original ‘Washington Redskins’, and get rid of the ridiculous moniker, ‘Washington Commandants’, I don’t want to make an appointment for them to build a stadium in Washington,” Trump said in a post on his truth social platform on Sunday.
The commanders signed an agreement to move back to the country’s capital after moving to Maryland. The current agreement would see the commanders returned with a new stadium in 2030.
The team left the name “Redskins” behind 2020 after years of pressure from groups complaining that the team was using a racial slurry for Native Americans as the name. The team initially went off the “Washington Football Team” until it settled on the commanders as its new name.
The Indians became Guardians in 2021 after similar pressure to change the name and team boss Wahoo logo. Cleveland Major League baseball team had been called the Indians since 1915.
On Sunday, Trump went on a truth that Social Rant demanded that the teams return to their original names and claimed that “our great Indian people” want the name to change.
It came when the president is under pressure for his links to Jeffrey Epstein and his administration’s failure to release all the files associated with his case.
“The Washington ‘no matter what needs to change their name back to Washington Redskin’s football team,” Trump wrote. “There is a great clinging for this. Likewise, the Cleveland Indians, one of the six original baseball teams, wants a stored past. Our great Indian people, in massive numbers, want this to happen. Their heritage and prestige are systematically removed !!!”
In 2020, a university in Michigan/University of California, Berkeley vote found to native American respondents was offended by the name “Redskins” and 65 percent said they were offended by “Tomahawk Chop” done at sporting events. Even more – 73 percent – said fans who made imitations of Native American dancers were offensive.
Despite Trump’s social media Tantrum, it doesn’t look like commanders will change their name soon. The team owner, Josh Harris, told Fox News back in April that there were no plans to restore the team’s original name.
“The Commander’s name has actually taken on a fantastic form of element in our building,” Harris told Fox News’ Bret Baier, who asked if the team would return to its original name as part of its new stadium dealer in Washington, DC “So the people that certain types of players are tough, the love football, are delegated commanders and jayden [Daniels]is, for example, a commander and they are ranked. “
Harris said since Washington DC is a “military town”, the team would be “proceed with the commander’s name, excited about it and not look back.”
There is also no indication that Guardians are planning a return to the “tribe”.
The team has long maintained that it took the name “Indians” to honor Louis Sockkalexis, assumed to be the first Native American player in the Major League baseball. Sockkalexis played with Cleveland -spider cups in the late 1800s. He died in 1913, and two years later, the then buttons naps changed their name to the Cleveland Indians, though there is no final way to know what the team’s intentions were at that time.
The Guardians’ new name refers to Art Deco “Guardians of Traffic” statues, towering over Hope Memorial Bridge, located just outside the team’s stadium in the center of Cleveland.
