How to pronounce Elon Musk’s son’s name, ‘x æ a-12’

Elon Musk and singer Grimes have three children together and all of them have unique names. They have a daughter, exa dark pages ling, 3 years and a son, Tau Techno Mechanicus, Age 2. have a rather complicated full name.

The boy goes past X, the same letter that the name Musk gave Twitter and uses in SpaceX. But his full name is more complicated.

It’s “X Æ A-12” and when he was born in 2020, Musk appeared on Joe Rogan Experience podcast and confirmed the name’s pronunciation.

“How do you say the name?” Asked Rogan. “Is that a placeholder?”

Apparently not. Musk said at the time the name is pronounced “x Ash one twelve.” (“Æ” is a character used in some languages, including Danish and Norwegian. It is often pronounced “ash” but some people say each letter and say “an E.”)

“First of all, my partner is the one who mostly came with the name,” Musk said of Grimes. “I mean, it’s just x, the letter x, and ‘æ’ is pronounced, ‘Ash’, and then A-12 is my contribution.” He continued to say that A-12 stood for “Archangel 12, the precursor of SR-71, coolest aircraft ever.”

Grimes twitly twited a more detailed explanation of why the different parts of the name were chosen by 2020. She called X “the unknown variable” and said that æ was “my alven spelling of ai”, which she explained as “love and/or artificial intelligence.

As for A-12, she called the plane “our favorite aircraft”, which continued to smooth its “no weapons, no defense, just speed. Great in combat, but non-violent.” Grimes also noted that A in A-12 stood for “Archangel,” as she said was “my favorite song.” She did not specify which song – several songs are entitled Archengel – but some music sites guessed that she could mean the song by Band Burial. Grimes once quoted Burial’s Archeline song as a favorite of her tumblr.

She ended her tweet with the words “metal rat” and emoji of crossed swords and a rat. 2020 was the year of the “Metal Rot” according to the Chinese zodiac sign, although of course it can also simply mean “fan of heavy metal music.”

Grimes wrongly SR-17 instead of SR-71, but Musk corrected her in another tweet and wrote, “SR-71, but yes.”

As she replied, “I am about to recover after surgery and hardly alive, then my writing error B must be forgiven but cursed. It was meant to be in -depth.”

It is possible that the name does not appear on the baby’s official birth certificate in California – at least not in the spelling that has been shared by his parents. A family law lawyer in California told People magazine that although the name is not illegal, the state does not allow symbols of birth certificates. Apostrophes, such as in a last name like O’Connor, are allowed, and it seems that the hyphen can handle it as well. But symbols such as “æ” can cause the certificate to be rejected and the parents had to resubmit it.
