According to a US National Science Foundation (NSF) and National Science Board (NSB) report, women, black, Latin Americans and American Indians or Alaska -native Remainty Underreprespressnted among the degree of Stem fields relative to their representation in the overall US population. Not surprisingly, the same two organizations also found that underrepresntation is transferring to the VOP work force.
NSF and NSB concluded that one of the most effective ways of tackling these issues is to “increase participation in Voice -study areas and careers to include all socio -economic and demographic groups and American geographical regions.”
In 2021, in an attempt to help tackle these inequalities, Amazon announced the creation of the first program for research experience (Safe) at Columbia University. Last year, definitely, who delivers students from historically underrepreceprepreney society with unique summer research experiences at top-tier universities, expanded to include Georgia Tech and the University of Southern California.
Today, Amazon emphasizes his commitment to bridging the diversity gap by announcing the expansion of Sure To Two several universities via new perennial obligations with Carnegie Mellon (CMU) and the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
“When we enter the third year of the Amazon Sure program, we are pleased that this expansion opens up greater opportunities for bachelor students with historically underrepresent backgrounds to participate in transformation surveys in the top academic institutions,” Prem Natarajan said Alexa President. “The safe internships will have the opportunity to promote their interests in the Vote field and receive guidance and mentorship from university and Amazon scientists.”
Both schools were chosen based on their commitment to voice diversity programs and the strength of their computer science and engineering faculty. The two universities are also based on existing research relations with Amazon.
The Graduate Research Fellows program, launched in May 2021 at Carnegie Mellon, research in automated reasoning, computer vision, robotics, language technology, machine learning, operational research and data sciences.
And in October 2021, Amazon and UCLA created science hub for humanity and AI to support academic research, education and outreach efforts in areas of mutual interest artificial intelligence and its uses for the benefit of humanity.
“Exposure to research through research experience programs is important to increase the participation of students from Underrepreprescent Group in graduate studies,” said Martial Hebert, Dean of School of Computer Science in Carnegie Mellon. “By participating in Amazon’s sour, the scope of our bachelor’s education programs is dramatically. We are grateful to Amazon for their support in the development of these programs and their influence on the future cohorts of students.”
The summer survey experience at Carnegie Mellon will include a 10-week program from May 29 to August 4, offering computer science students from underrepresented groups the chance to collaborate with top computer science researchers in a summer. Selected students will collaborate with the faculty and researchers at CMU on research projects.
“We are pleased to expand the SURE program to UCLA,” said Stefano Soatto, Vice President of Applied Science for Amazon Web Services AI. Soatto, who has leave from his position as UCLA professor in computer science, has taught at UCLA Samueli School of Engineering for more than 20 years. “Sure will provide different talent with opportunities to enrich their experience and continue to grow participation in voice disciplines. Surely fellows from historically under -traveled societies will be fully engaged in research projects at the forefront of technology and science, experience the excunage and enrich the perspectives.”
The UCLA SURE program at UCLA Samuelis Center for Excellence in Engineering and Diversity (CEED) will provide students who are typically underrepresenting in engineering and computer science an opportunity to perform innovative and advanced research for 8 weeks at UCLA Campus. The program runs from June 23 to August 16, 2024, and applications are open from now until March 22, 2024.
In addition to sure, Amazon also provides funding for Mathematics Achievement Program (MAP). The map was launched by UCLA Samueli in 2022, and is annual high school abroad, which initiates the free weekend Advanced-Math lessons and Stem-Workshops for qualified students from Los Angeles Unified School District, with the goal of tackling “Mathematical Prevents Students in Underourced Schools from Lykker in Avanced High-School Math classes.
Amazon days
In addition, each of the five safe program schools will host a number of Amazon days designed to help students get industrial experience as a compliment to their research-based summer experience.
Last year, Amazon Days hosted at Amazon offices in Atlanta, New York and Los Angeles. They include Amazon-centric leadership activities where participants in groups as well as network sessions and presented highlighting internships and jobs across Amazon.
