Amazon and the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) today announced the creation of the Amazon IIT bombay AI-ML initiative.
Amazon IIT-Bombay AI-ML initiative is a multi-year collaboration that funds research projects, PhD fellowships and social events, such as research symposia. The initiative that will be housed in the IIT Bombay Department of Computer Science and Engineering will promote artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) in speech, language and multimodal-IA domains.
“We at IIT Bombay are obliged to our mission to translate knowledge and research into revolutionary technologies,” said Subhasis Chaudhuri, director at Iit Bombay. “Our top research mind always has attractive attention to companies that are interested in scientific study. With industry partners such as Amazon, which has a deep sense of technology and global reach, we hope to be able to accelerate the implementation of technologies and products within AI/ml.”
Iit Bombay
Iit Bombay ranks among the best engineering institutes in India and is known for producing advanced research in AI and ML. Computer Science and Engineering Department is one of the big ones on the subcontinent, with 45 full -time faculty members. Amazon’s sponsorship of the Amazon IIT bombay AI-ML initiative reflects its dedication to tackling complex research challenges in AI through deep collaboration with excellent centers of academic research.
“We are pleased that Amazon is entering India through this initiative without the area of academic industrial collaboration with IIT Bombay,” said Milind Atrey, Iit Bombay Dean for Research and Development. “This collaboration will promote innovation in three ways through social projects, research projects and scholarships that will actually incite developments within AI and ML domains as well as other areas as the relationship progresses.”
“Amazon’s growing research and development operations in India have engaged commitment with Alexa users in Hindi and Indian languages, and their AI/ML -Innovations have delivered increasingly wonderful shopping experiences,” said Rohit Prasad, Alexa Senior Vice President and main scientist. “This investment at one of the world’s first academic institutions will bring together Amazon scientists and IIT Bombay students and faculty, utilizing India’s multilingualism as a learning laboratory to develop new AI systems that can learn and adapt to different languages, accents and dialects. Progress technology that is fundamental to the future of conversation AI.”
Amazon and Iit Bombay have existed, including through the Amazon Research Awards program. The latest award was grabbed in 2022 to Preethi JyothiAssociate Professor of Computer Science and Technology at Iit Bombay, who was recognized for his work with justice in speech recognition.
Amazon in India
Amazon has an extensive presence in India and serves approx. 600 million people in the country today. This presence included Alexa AI research offices in Bengaluru, where researchers solve technically challenging problems related to the needs of people in India, who speak more than 22 official languages with over 19,500 dialects and Hyderabad, while science information on catching up, forecasts, delivery planning and reduction of packaging costs.
Alexa researchers in India have been at the forefront of research into multilingual machine learning from speech treatment and natural linguistic understanding of voice generation. In fact, the Alexa team in India launched a single machine learning model that can understand English, Hindi or a mixture of both. Further innovations from the India team will be geared globally to enable Alexa to better understand customer requests across several different languages.
In addition to the Amazon IIT bombay AI-ML initiative, Amazon sponsors a free annual ML Summer School offered to engineer in India, trained from Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD programs. During the course of four weeks, students from all over the country gather to learn the basics of ML.
The summer school and this collaboration mark an expansion of Amazon’s ongoing efforts to accelerate the growth of technological innovation in India.
