Why Crimea means so much to Putin – and now Trump

Of all the 20 percent of Ukraine’s territory taken after Russia invaded Crimea 11 years ago and launched its wider Anschluss in 2022, Crimea is the largest Russian award.

Whoever controls Sevastopol is likely to dominate the Black Sea and the sea of Azov. Outside of Tartus, in Syria, which Russia recently lost, it is that is-or-Russia’s only hot weather gate.

Putin utilizes his ceasefire for Battlefield benefits, says ISW

Russian President Vladimir Putin exploits unilateral truce for information and battlefield benefits in Ukraine, says a US-based think tank.

The strategic ceasefire announced by Mr. Putin goes against Donald Trump’s goal of using a general ceasefire as a stepping stone against a sustained and sustainable peace agreement in Ukraine, said Institute for The Study of War.

“Putin seems to be opportunistically to declare a ceasefire during major religious and military holidays to force Ukraine to accept the ceasefire or risk that appears inconsistent to the West,” ISW said in his latest assessment.

It added that the Russian president “probably considers the Victory Day weapon to a chance for Russian forces to rest prior to future front-line activity in Ukraine and as a way of ensuring that Ukraine does not make any significant long-range strikes against Russia during Victory Day celebrations.”

“Putin probably doesn’t see the Victory Day weapon as a serious step towards lasting peace in Ukraine,” Isw said.
